Google Maps Tour

Inspired by this frighteningly funny video (ht:Matt), I decided to go on a google maps “This is Your Life” tour.

From 1999 to 2004 I lived in Arkadelphia, Arkansas on the campus of Ouachita Baptist University. I met my wife there. I met my best friends in the whole world there. I lived with an African there. I saw the Gurdon Light there. I got a B.A. there.

Then, we moved to the Rock while I worked at Geyer Springs. We lived in what is commonly referred to as ‘The Hood’. It was awesome.

Next, we moved to Peru. Yeah, Google has it’s all seeing eye on Peru as well. That big tree area is the park that our apartment overlooked.

Here is a shot of the Promise House (from street view) where we’ve been the last year and a half, and where we’ll be for just 3 more weeks.

And, now, where we are going. Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary is located just outside of Memphis in Cordova, TN.

Books. Lots and lots of books.

So, I’m at the library right now. McMath Library if you’d like to come by and visit. It’s on Barrow Rd. Near the house with all the external decor.

I’m just chillaxin’.

That’s one of our girls behind me. She’s waiting on one of the computers to open up.

One thing I’ve noticed about this library is the quantity of books. It’s like this place is book-obsessed. I’m going to look into it. I’ll let you know if I get to the bottom of all this bookishness.

Taken from our 15 passenger van (through the front window) as we drove across the river bridge on I-30. Postprocessed (blue to yellow) on picnik.com. From the Serendipitous Symmetry set.

River Fest is over.

In conclusion to Arkansas’ biggest shindig, here are the highlights in Kerouacish stream-of-consciousness form.

Random River Fest Shots

{Albany Marine Corp Band Tubateer}

{The Fountain}

She’ll get’em next year.

Sadly, Sooie didn’t qualify for the championship round to take place tomorrow. She was just a few inches short of getting a shot at the title.  She and Andrew did great, but it wasn’t quite enough. She’ll get’em next year!

River Fest!

I’ll be broadcasting live from River Fest in downtown Little Rock this weekend. Be checking in for photos, videos, and commentary on Arkansas’ biggest shindig!

Of particular interest is the SRS National Dock Jumping Crown Championship. Only 15 dogs in the U.S. qualify for the Crown Championship and Sooie, my brother-in-law’s dog, is one of them. Pretty sweet.

You can read more about River Fest here. And Dock Jumping here.

Me & My Girl

Boyle Park, Little Rock. 24 April 2008

Boyle Park Slide

One of the great things about being a parent is getting to see your kids grow and learn and discover. And, it seems like Sophia is discovering something new everyday. She just discovered caterpillars on Monday. Now, every morning she wakes up and says “Gusanos? Where’d it go? No se.” (Gusano means Caterpillar and No se means I don’ know.) So, we go out on the deck and hang out with the gusanos for a while.

Now, she has discovered the slide. Boyle Park is right up the road and has some great playground stuff. Watch Sophia conquer the slide here.

Caterpillar! Caterpillar! Caterpillar!

Caterpillars are pretty fun. Especially if you’ve never seen one before.

And, it seems like the Promise House deck has become the caterpillar hang-out of Little Rock. Which, is fine by the Sophie and I. We’ve been having a blast chasing the little hairy boogers around.

We’re Good

Everyone at the Promise House is good (maybe just a little shaken up). Others in and around Little Rock weren’t as fortunate.  Here are some images reported by THV.

In Transit

This whole NCAA shindig went down today. That’s a little scary because it takes time to get tickets. I ordered the tickets out of Austin, TX today at 2:38pm. The first game starts at 11:30 tomorrow morning.

The tickets’ gauranteed arrival time, 10:30am, is precariously close to tip-off. So, here I am, tracking the package on fedex.com to see what’s happening. Right now, all they are giving me is this cryptic statement: in transit.

That doesn’t help! Give me a city name, a mile marker, anything!!! These bad boys have to go through Memphis (yeah, I know) and then back to Little Rock. That doesn’t make much sense. I mean, I could probably go wait on the side of the interstate and flag the truck down as it passed through Little Rock on its way to Memphis.

Gaines Street Missionary Baptist Church

Shirley, Joy, Wanda, and Otis (pictured) from Gaines Street Missionary Baptist Church visited us at the Promise House last week. They hooked us up with some corn on the cob, Shirley’s fire green beans, rolls, and fried chicken.

Jesus takes care of us.  It’s amazing to see how God uses his church to encourage us.

Snow

Snow in Little Rock is kind of like ordering chicken strips at Mi Ranchito. It just isn’t right. Or, at least, it just isn’t expected. But, lo and behold, it snowed Monday morning. Granted, it only lasted for a few hours and by mid-afternoon there was no trace, but it snowed!

Not by a Long Shot

People often ask me what it is that I do at the Promise House. Apparently, the term ‘housedad’ isn’t as self-explanatory as I would like to assume. I guess it is understandable because, truthfully, I usually have a difficult time fleshing it out myself. After a few seconds of half sentences I usually resort to “Well, I guess I am basically a dad.” And, in reality, that is the best way to put it: I am a dad.

Granted, I am not your typical, briefcase-carrying, off-to-work-every-morning, coffee-sipping, golf-playing dad (though, I do consider myself somewhat of a coffee connoisseur). I am no Mike Brady, not by a long shot. How many dads that you know have 6 pregnant teenage daughters?

The Zoo

The zoo is awesome. We went today with Big Ron and Abuela. I know everyone always says that the Little Rock zoo isn’t all that great. And, I guess compared to other zoos, it’s not. But, I definitely enjoyed it! And Sophia made friends with a Spider Monkey and some Lorikeets. So, it’s A-OK in my book. Here are the highlites:

We’re going to the zoo!

Giraffe! Jirafa!

Dude, that thing is huge!

Let’s go! Let’s go!! Let’s go!!!

Hello. Would you happen to have a banana? (He really said that.)

Here yittle yorikeet. I yuv you.

Big Dam Bridge

We made it out to the Big Dam Bridge today with Amanda’s parents and our two new girls. Sophia sported her pink shades.

Update

Things continue to move forward here at the Promise House. The girls are now back in school. One of our girls is scheduled to be induced tomorrow morning. Another is dilated to a 2.

Sophia has been a little sick the past couple of days. It seems like every time she goes to the doctor for a scheduled check up she comes home with something.

I have begun three seminary classes. Two at SouthWestern extension here in Little Rock, and one via internet from Southern. I’m excited about studying again. I’m taking Applied Ministry, NT Greek I, and Introduccion al Nuevo Testamento I.

Back to Arkansas

After our visa adventure we turned our sites towards home. Karen Price got us new plane tickets for 11:30 Thursday morning. The Worthys were leaving at 10:30 from the same airport. So we worked together packing and such. We left MLC at around 8:15. We got to Richmond Int’l and checked in.

This was the sad part. We waited at their gate for boarding. We got to give the kiddos a few more hugs. We gave Charlie and Shannon hugs and told them bye. Sniffle.

Then to our flight. An hour to Cinncinatti. A quick sprint to our connecting flight. An hour and half to Little Rock.

A Month Away

We are about 1 month away from Peru. We have learned so much here (and it’s only half over) and it has steadily been culminating into an excitement about taking part of what God wants to do in Peru.

It’s exciting to be doing something new and living in a new country, but what makes life truly full and abundant is taking on a job that God has given us, whether that be in Peru, Little Rock, Chang Mai, or Mexico. Life is all about spreading His fame. For His glory. For His renown.
