Mom’s and Babies
Originally uploaded by ryan.bush.
I didn’t know the first girl in the picture. I met her at the shower. Her little boy is three months old. The second lady is Beth and her baby Aurora–it was their shower. Then Sarah and Amelia and Sophia and me.
Sophia is two months old today! I can’t believe how she is growing. Last night she rolled over twice from her stomach to her back–without any cheating!!! She was hungry and mad, though. I think that gives her motivation!
This weekend we had a revival at our church. It was really great. We had different speakers each night. Ryan played the drums–Sophia and I were so proud! We love our church. Our pastor and his wife are incredible. We really feel like we are part of the church family here. Talking about church reminded me about Sophia’s baby dedication. We had a baby dedication for Sophia while Ryan’s parents were here. Ryan spoke and the pastor said a few things. The pastor held her and prayed for us and her. It was very special, espcially since Ryan’s parents were here.
On Saturday I went to a baby shower. It was so much fun. It was for a girl who was in my prenatal class. Her husband works for the embassy. She went back to the U.S. to have her baby and just got back last Wednesday. Another girl from our class was also there. We all three had our babies within a week of each other–all girls: Sophia, Aurora, and Amelia. It was so fun getting to share stories!
Carlos is one of our oldest translators. He has been married for just over two years. He runs his own adventure sports business. He is often out of Lima leading groups up the Andean mountains.
Carlos started coming to English Fellowship to better his English. Through the example of U.S. volunteer teams, Carlos fell in love with Jesus.
Now, Carlos is praying for his wife. She’s not a believer yet. Carlos is also learning the guitar. He bring his guitar to our meetings to learn the worship songs.
Has anyone seen the nooma videa by Rob Bell called “dust”? It is awesome. Basically, it talks about how in Jesus’ day rabbis had disciples . . . . and the goal of a disciple was to be exactly like his rabbi.
It really challenged me to be the kind of person Jesus was. I want to do the things that Jesus would do for the same reasons that Jesus would do them. That’s hard! I’ve realized that it depends completely on how much time I spend with the rabbi.
There are two Mexican families that attend our church. And, in case you didn’t know, yesterday was one of Mexico’s independence days. So, the Mexican families invited everybody to celebrate the special day over some authentic Mexican Tacos, made by real, live Mexicans! Viva Mexico!
God has blessed us, guided us, cared for us, protected us . . . . that’s really the bottom line. When we find ourselves worried about the future . . . . about the present, it’s usually because we’ve forgotten how big our God is, and that it’s really not about us at all, it’s about Him.
I was reading in Isaiah this morning about how God can weigh the mountains on a scale. That no one can teach God anything about science or wisdom. That all the waters of earth are like a drop in his hand. What am I worried about!? God is with us. Moreover, God has been pursuing us for a long time to the extent of willing to pay a big price for us to be able to commune with him like we did in that garden.
As for me, I’m gonna try to be less worried and more joyful, intentional. I’m gonna try to live like a true son of the King . . . . because that’s what I am.
. . . and we rode some of them today! One of the great things about Peru is that they’re not so worried about law-suits and stuff. No helmets. No release forms. No rules.
We drove out of dark, dank, cloudy, sad Lima to sunny, warm, happy, Cienaguilla to find a place to ride horses. One of our translators, Alberto had been wanting to ride a horse for a long time.
Sophia was pretty excited about it. She grunted and drooled extra today.
And you should’ve seen the new mom! Wow! Who knew she was a professional horseback rider!
This is so crazy to me. The only fresh milk you can buy is only found at a few stores and the stores don’t always have it. It comes in one liter plastic bottles. The main problem is it is whole milk, so I try not to buy it very much.
The other option for buying milk, which is what most Peruvians buy, is boxed milk. It is liquid, and it is found on the shelf. It is not refrigerated. When I get home, I put it in the fridge because I like cold milk. Today I was looking at the expiration date, and I just started laughing. I told Ryan that there is something wrong when your milk doesn’t expire until March of 2007!!! There’s a rumor among the young missionaries here that the milk has phermaldahide in it!!!
Milk is one thing I’m looking forward to when we get home!

Last week we spent a lot of time catching up on things. I helped Kathy cook for a group who got here Friday night. Actually, my Aunt Brenda is on the team. It’s a group from The Church at Rock Creek in LR. She got to see Sophia for a little bit on Saturday. She was so excited about seeing her. The group gets back to Lima Friday afternoon. They don’t leave until Saturday night, so Brenda will get to spend some more time with her great-niece. We love Aunt Brenda!
Saturday we had a training for all our translators. We have been having a lot of new people at classes who are interested in traveling, and we thought we needed to take some time to get everybody on the same page. Among the topics we covered were our beliefs, what is REAP, what to expect on trips, tips for translating, rules on trips, how to pack for trips. We had a time of question/answer, and some of our veteran translators where able to share about their experiences. We had 50 people there. I was very excited. I had a list of trips for the end of September, October, and November. So I got a lot of slots filled, which helps a lot. I felt like the training went really well.
As a team, we have also been having meetings with Baptist churches here in Lima. We have been sharing about REAP with these churches. We are hoping some churches here in Lima will partner with our U.S. churches to work together. The Church at Rock Creek has been partnering with a church here, and it has gone really well.
Have I mentioned that I love being a mom. Sophia is the sweetest baby. I am learning so much by having her. I am so thankful for her. It makes me sad to think about her getting big. Ryan says I’m crazy because she’s only 7 weeks old, but she’s already changed so much.

I can’t believe it’s been over a week since Ryan’s family (well, they’re my family too!) left, and I can’t believe that Sophia was seven weeks old yesterday. Time is flying!
We had so much fun with Ryan’s family. We were able to show them a lot of Lima, even with the baby. Sophia was so good when we were out sightseeing. We took them to the ocean, to different markets, downtown. They were brave trying different Peruvian food. Ron, Ethan, and Jessica ate some ceviche, which is a favorite of many Peruvians. It is fish cooked only with lemon juice. Sophie, Barb, and I decided to pass!!! At night we played games–boggle. I always lost, but we had fun!
We only knew about Ron, Barb, and Ethan coming. They got here Saturday night, the 26th. When we woke up Tuesday morning, they had a letter to Sophia from Jessica for us to read. They wanted Ryan to read it out loud. I was kind of confused. I thought it was sweet that Jessica had written a letter to the baby, but I didn’t see why they were so excited about it and wanted it read out loud. In the letter, Jessica talked about how excited she was to be an aunt. She said she was so excited that she couldn’t stay away. She told Sophia to tell her dad to come pick Aunt Jessica up at the airport Tuesday night. It was the best surprise ever! I loved having Jessica here. She is so much fun. It was great for the whole family to be together. God was so good to give us time together.

Here’s my brother at Surquillo with a pig’s head. I’m not sure what you would make out of that, but I want no part of it!

This picture was taken at one of our local markets here in Lima. It’s called Mercado Surquillo. This might have been my family’s favorite place . . . . we went there on 3 or 4 different days.
Here are some more cool pics of the market.
