I’m sorry sorry sorry sorry! . . . for not updating in forever. Things have been absolutely crazy around here. We’ve been preparing for our 50 summer missionaries all month and they started coming in Monday.
I went to the airport many time this week! And have had little sleep. Tomorrow they all go out into different areas of the Andes mountains. I’ll be going with one of them for a week.
Amanda flies to the states on Sunday. I’ll follow her on the 4th. Phew! I’ve got to get to bed!

Amanda said she expected a Mother’s Day present . . . I told her that was a lot to expect of an unborn child and a cat!!
Happy Mother’s day Mom and Ging!!

Friday afternoon we loaded up with 20 5th & 6th graders (and 5 more adults) and headed for the hills. The International Christian School of Lima took their middle schoolers on a camping trip and we were recruited as chaperones. We went out past Chosica on the central highway.
It was a really short trip, but really good. There were kids from the U.S., Korea, Japan, Peru, and maybe a few more places. I felt like I was back in Arkansas, with the campfire, tents, the trees, and river. It was a really nice time.
But, in the middle of the night someone stole our ice-chest with all the lunch meat and cheese in it. So we went to McDonald’s on the way back into Lima. And then, last night someone stole my camera out of our truck. So, right now I feel kind of disillusioned with Peru.

Baptism

Jeff and Judy Hughes work with University students here in Lima. A couple of weeks ago we attended and baptism of one of the students they have been working with. Jeff baptized him in a swimming pool.
Here are the websites for the Hughes if you want to learn more about them or their ministry.

Lidman

Let me introduce you to Lidman Presentación.
Lidman is from Huanuco, small town east of Lima. He studied in seminary a few years ago here in Lima. Then went back to work in Huanuco as a combi driver. He made 12 S/. a day (less than 4$). He then met a group of missionaries from Kentucky. They felt like God wanted them to help Lidman. So, they set aside some money for him to study English in Lima.
Now he is in Lima. He lives in one of the extra bedrooms in the REAPSouth office. He has become a really good friend. Probably my best peruvian friend.
Lidman is going to travel with one of summer missionary teams.

We had all the Hutchison girls over a few nights ago for dinner and a movie. Amanda fixed spagetti and we watched the Chronicles of Narnia.

This is going to be sad month for the Bush family. The Hutchison family is leaving. And the Martinez family is leaving.
The Hutchison’s are finishing there term. They’ll be moving to Texas.
The Martinez family is going on stateside assignment. They’ll be in the U.S. until January. Then, about the time we’re heading home, they’ll be returning to Peru.

The Peruvian elections took place last month. To become president of Peru you’ve got to obtain 50% of the votes. Because of the fact that there were close to 20 candidates . . . it was going to be very difficult for anyone to get that many votes. So . . . we have a run-off election here June 4th between Ollanta Humala and Alan Garcia.
Ollanta is a communist. Good friends with Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro. Has plans to nationalize a lot of the country’s natural resources (like Morales in Bolivia is doing), and make it difficult on foreigners.
Alan Garcia was president in the 80′s. During his presidency inflation was so bad people couldn’t afford bread.
