IT’S A GIRL!!!

IT’S A GIRL!!!!!

This is Milagros. We met her a few weeks ago in Corongo, Ancash. We were there training a few pastors and church workers.

She was one that attended the training. She is from Lima, but God asked her to work in Aco. It’s a small pueblo outside of Corongo.

She had been there for a year when her support was almost up. She is now living in Lima. She is planning on trying to get a degree in a education so she can go back to Aco to continue the work and be able to earn money at the same time.

We were able to have lunch with her. Please pray that God will show her what to do next. Ask God to show her where to get the funds to continue to do what God is calling her to do. God always provides makes provision to accomplish that which he calls us to.

I just received some photos from our jungle trip. Here’s one of a local chief.  Posted by Picasa

True Love Waits in Peru

Tomorrow Amanda and I will be going to the International Christian School of Lima to talk to kids about . . . . . you know.

Thankfully, it’ll be in English. Grace Hutchison asked us if we’d do a little something on the subject for her science class.

We’ll let you know how it turns out. : )

Daniel. He is from Ayacucho and speaks Quechua, Spanish, and now he is learning English.  Posted by Picasa

English Fellowship

We’re still plugging away with the translator ministry. We’ve had really small classes the past few months. January and February are the vacation months . . . so everybody is off schedule. Things are starting to pick back up again.

Amanda and I are really hoping that God will allow us to help some of the translators meet him for the first time this year. We have a lot of translators who don’t know Jesus . . . . but are really open. Almost every week we explain the gospel. We’re praying that God will allow us to sow some of the seeds.

Here are some photos of class.

Did you know Alf speaks Spanish? Posted by Picasa

ALF

We don’t have cable, but with our bunny ears we get about 5 local channels. Most of the time only Peruvian shows are on. But every once and a while they’ll put out a dubbed U.S. sitcom or movie.
Alf is one of our favorites.

Road to the beach. This is the only picture I got before the batteries went dead in my camera.  Posted by Picasa

Puerto Viejo

The beach. There’s like 5 billion beaches in Peru. In fact, the whole western border is one big beach! So, I guess there’s not 5 billion beaches . . . there’s just one . . . . but it’s really really really long!

Anyway, we decided to visit one this morning for a few hours. Puerto Viejo se llama. About an hour outside of Lima. It was cool. We were the only people out there, except for a few surfers. We didn’t stay too long. Just enough time for Amanda to get cooked.

I did, however, learn how to drive on sand. Rule #1: Put your vehicle in High 4. Rule #2: Don’t slow down! Rule #3: Getting some speed up before you hit the soft sand.

I followed none of these rules (because I didn’t know them yet) and got stuck big time! I dug and dug and dug and dug . . . and put rocks and rocks and dug and dug. Finally this really cool surfer guy came and pulled us out and showed me how to drive on sand.

Deacons

They installed two new deacons at our church this morning. The pastor talked about how the word Deacon comes from the Greek word to serve. I never knew that. Deacons were originally put into place to do the tough, behind the scenes jobs of serving the church.

The Classified Ads Posted by Picasa

El Comercio

El Comercio is the Peruvian paper of record. It’s a lot like the ARDem, but in Spanish! I’ll buy one every few days to see what’s inside. I’m to the point now, where I can read most of the articles without too many problems.

It’s really interesting to look at things like the Classifieds. I used to always look at them in the U.S. It seems to be a lot of the same stuff: cars, ice-cream makers, desks, couches, etc.

Right now the presidencial election is occupying the front page these days. Humala and Flores are duking it out. They go back and forth in the polls. The elections will be the 9th of April.

NCAA in Peru

I had my hopes up kind of high when the Razorbacks went on a 6 game winning streak to secure a spot in the NCAA tournament. They lost in the first round to Bucknell (who’s that!) but I’m still enjoying as much of the action as I can.

I can watch a play by play on all the games on Yahoo Sports. And Peruvian cable will show some of the games. We don’t have cable. But the guesthouse does!

GSFBC

The Geyer Springs team made it into Peru last night . . . . around midnight. It’s good to see familiar faces!

They took off for the mountains of Huancavelica this morning.

They brought with them a bag of goodies for us! Including a new digital camera, books, a heart monitor for the baby . . . . etc.

GSFBC has been working in Huancavelica for a couple of years now. Find out more about GSFBC here: http://www.gsfbc.org/

Welcome to SA

South America marches to the beat of a different drummer. . . At least to a different beat than that of the U.S. But that’s not a bad thing! Things are different. Way back when we were going through training at MLC they told us: “It’s different culture. It’s not worse or better. It’s just different.” They told us to focus on the good things about our new culture.

Obviously, there are good and bad things about every culture. And some funny things too.

Like, in Peruvian culture, you should always give an affirmative answer. For example:

Ignorant Gringo: (to new Peruvian friend) You want to go eat cebiche tomorrow for lunch?
New Peruvian Friend: Yes. (knowing full well he cannot do it)
Ignorant Gringo: Great! Let’s meet at Las Casa de Cebiche at 1:00pm.
New Peruvian Friend: Ok.
Ignorant Gringo: Ciao!
New Peruvian Friend: Nos vemos!

The next day the Ignorant Gringo waits at the restaurant. His friend doesn’t show so he calls his cell phone.

Ignorant Gringo: Where are you?
New Peruvian Friend: In class.
Ignorant Gringo: I thought we were gonna eat lunch. Did you know you had class today?
New Peruvian Friend: Yes.
Enlightened Gringo: Ooooohhhhhhh. K.
