I love books. But, I haven’t read a single one since I’ve been here. I’ve tried to read a few Spanish books . . . that’s some serious work.
It’s really easy to lose perspective . . . even when you’re given a pretty good panorama of life. I lose it a lot. I get stuck on this thing or that thing. On our trip to La Merced, we were having ‘car church’ . . . that is, church in the car. Cindy read us the October 16th passage of ‘My Utmost For His Highest’ dice:
. . . We are taken up with active work while poeple all around us are ready to meet God, and we do not give them the time of day, but waste Jesus’ time with overenergized activities. Suppose the crisis come in your father’s life, in your brother’s, in your neighbor’s life, are you there as a labourer to lead them to the Master, Jesus Christ? “Oh but I have a special work to do!” No follower of Jesus has a special work to do. A follower of Jesus is called to be Jesus Christ’s own, one who is not above his master, one who does not dictate to Jesus Christ what he intends to do. Our Lord calls to no special work: He calls to Himself. He will engineer the circumstances and thrust you out.
He engineers the circumstances for us everyday. A neighbor calls distraught about his sick baby. Another neighbor calls because her friend’s shack burned down and she tried to kill herself with pills. He’s engineering the circumstances, and we’re trying to make ourselves available to be thrust out.
They key, I think, is not getting overly focussed on “my special work” . . . the key is staying focussed on the One who gives me work. Taking it a day at a time.

It was so good to see some of our best friends from GSFBC this week. We spent the whole day Friday with them. Dave H., Scott H., Phil H., Jim D., Rick M., Linda B., Judy D., Elaine H. all came to Peru just to visit us! Well, not exactly . . . but it was so good to see them!!!
Actually, they were here just in time for our 2 year anniversary and my 25th birthday. We couldn’t have asked for a better present . . . getting to see all them.

After church Sunday we went to Leyshton’s house for his daughters first b-day party. They fed us lunch. We had papa de huancayina and arroz con pollo. It was very good! We kept waiting for the folks to show up….. Turns out the actual shindig wasn’t getting started until ‘5:00′ . . . which means 7:00. So we had to leave before things really got rolling.

Our church is doing a 40 Days of Missions campaign. Every Sunday different missionaries speak. It’s really cool. There are lots of Peruvian believers heading out to all over the world. India, Africa, etc.

This guy took care of the botanical gardens we visited (complete with alligators). He’s showing us where he grows his snails to sell to restaurants.

This was our guide we hired for the day. Actually, he’s a taxi driver . . . who happened to know a lot about the area. Here he’s showing us how to eat termites. He says it’s good for fertility. . . . no thanks.

La Ciudad de Las Flores: Tarma. This little town has hundreds of little fields like this one filled with fowers. During certain weeks of the year, they told us that the streets are completely covered with flower petals.

And snow and 15,000 foot mountains and lots of little villages. Sunday afternoon we were struck with a pretty serious case of wander lust . . . lucky for us we were in a different country with no shortage of places to wander to. We headed towards the jungle.
We travelled about six hours directly inland from Lima . . . about halfway to Brazil. Our destination: La Merced. This is where the high jungle begins. It was awesome! I’ve never seen anything like it. We only had about 6 hours do see the sights so we did our best to make the most of them.
We headed back towards Lima about 2:00pm the next day.
Here are some pictures.
