I love books. But, I haven’t read a single one since I’ve been here. I’ve tried to read a few Spanish books . . . that’s some serious work.
It’s really easy to lose perspective . . . even when you’re given a pretty good panorama of life. I lose it a lot. I get stuck on this thing or that thing. On our trip to La Merced, we were having ‘car church’ . . . that is, church in the car. Cindy read us the October 16th passage of ‘My Utmost For His Highest’ dice:
. . . We are taken up with active work while poeple all around us are ready to meet God, and we do not give them the time of day, but waste Jesus’ time with overenergized activities. Suppose the crisis come in your father’s life, in your brother’s, in your neighbor’s life, are you there as a labourer to lead them to the Master, Jesus Christ? “Oh but I have a special work to do!” No follower of Jesus has a special work to do. A follower of Jesus is called to be Jesus Christ’s own, one who is not above his master, one who does not dictate to Jesus Christ what he intends to do. Our Lord calls to no special work: He calls to Himself. He will engineer the circumstances and thrust you out.
He engineers the circumstances for us everyday. A neighbor calls distraught about his sick baby. Another neighbor calls because her friend’s shack burned down and she tried to kill herself with pills. He’s engineering the circumstances, and we’re trying to make ourselves available to be thrust out.
They key, I think, is not getting overly focussed on “my special work” . . . the key is staying focussed on the One who gives me work. Taking it a day at a time.
