Radiohead: Nude Remix
| April 1st, 2008
Radiohead. They’ve been making amazing music for a while now (In Rainbows was heralded by many to be the best album of 2007). But, it seems like lately they’re getting more attention for their innovative distribution methods.
In Rainbows was released online. The price? Well, you got to name your price. Seriously. It wasn’t a joke or a ploy. You went to the site, named your price (it could be 0$, if you wanted) and downloaded the album. For a band of their stature to release an album independently, online, for a buyer-determined price is sheer madness!
And now, more craziness. They are offering the ‘stems’ of a track from In Rainbows to the masses for dissection and recreation. Stems are basically the different tracks that are mixed together to make a song (example: drums stem, piano stem, vocals stem, etc.).
Users create remixes using the stems and can then upload them to the Radiohead site to be voted on. You can buy the stems on iTunes and upload your remix here.
So are you going to buy them and remix it? Let me know as soon as you do and send me the tracks so I can too. However, I’m not going to pay to get the privilege to remix their song.
I do love the disclaimer though: “You don’t have any legal rights over this music just by cutting it up or whatever.” Hilarious. Especially since their hit single “Idioteque” from ‘Kid A’ was made entirely from a drum machine track, vocals and a sample from an ’70′s synth guru, Paul_Lansky.
Oh, and you can hear it here, about 30 seconds in, listen closely.
Matt >> I probably will not buy them. Mainly because I don’t have a program with which to remix them. No garage band. There might be a free program I could download . . . but, at the moment, I don’t have much desire to learn it.
I have, however, enjoyed listening to the remixes that have been uploaded.
