Things I Almost Believed Once
| January 11th, 2008Here is a list of things that I believed at one time or another about God and myself. Some are of more consequence than others.
What about you? Share some of your busted myths in the comments.
- God isn’t cool with having fun.
- God expects me to get dressed up for church.
- Knowledge of the Bible equals a relationship with God.
- I should say ‘bless you’ after someone sneezes because ‘That’s what Jesus would do.’
- I can be good enough.
- If I don’t capitalize the word ‘God’ I will be smote.
- If I don’t read the Bible and pray everyday, God gets mad.
- I have to earn God’s acceptance and love.
Did you see the lump that grew in my throat? I remember believing those same things back in the day. Whew so glad I know better now. Thank you Lord!
I see it. There’s one in mine too. Life with our relational, personal, organic, graceful God is so full.
I used to believe that He’d be mad if I didn’t spend time with him, too. Now, I just know He misses me. Different mindset that I like.
I love that. Realizing we’re in a relationship and not a dictatorship. Good stuff.
i used to believe that the effectiveness of my preaching/ministry was dependent on how faithful i was leading up to an “event.” the lord has been patient with me-showing me that it is his faithfulness that progresses the gospel, not mine. all i have to do is love him and love people.
i used to think preachers got to audibly hear words from the Lord.
cabot panther » that is crazy. because, i’m the exact same way, but never really thought about it. it’s like i’ve always thought that a few solid days of being holy would infuse power into whatever event i was leading or taking part in.
ctown must not be doing something right, b/c i know when i am about to preach, i hear what the lord wants me to say. busch (and that is not a type-o, all my alchi’s know what i am talking about)can i get an amen on the audible word from the lord. its clear that ol’ ctown is not connected. maybe he has the wrong number?
cabot panther » Personally, I’ve never heard them. But, then again, I’m no preacher. Hey, did you guys get that rabbit punch thing figured out?
I’ve only heard God’s voice audibly twice and both times I had been waiting for an answer for months if not years. It was so odd to me. But unfortunately, Ryan, I have some friends who believe some of those things on the list and it can be frustrating.
