“Pagan Christianity”

| December 27th, 2007

Tyndale is publishing the book “Pagan Christianity” by Frank Viola and George Barna. It’s due out in January, but it’s already making people mad. Which only leads me to assume that it must be really good.

Here’s the argument the book makes: “Most of what present-day Christians do in church each Sunday is rooted not in the New Testament, but in pagan culture and rituals developed long after the death of the apostles.”

And the authors go on to make the point that this is not necessarily reason to throw them out, but that they should be re-evaluated and, in some cases, demoted.

Church buildings, sermons, choirs, seminaries, dressing up for church and a lot of other things church folk consider the important are called into question.

I’m sure I’ll have more to say about it once I actually get a chance to read it.

Interesting! I’ll have to check that out. I’ve gotten to where I’ve started wearing jeans occasionally on Sunday mornings with a nice shirt. I think as long as you show up, God doesn’t care what you look like. I have a woman in my Sunday School class who wears a tee shirt that says “Jesus loves me and my tattoos.” Of course, she has them all over her arms, so they’re very visible. But I thinks it’s a cool shirt.

It should be a challenging book to say the least. I’ve got to get me a “Jesus love me and my tattoos” shirt. Do you think they have those at wal-mart? Of course, I don’t have any tattoos . . . yet.

I seriously doubt it came from Wally World. :) Maybe Mardel. I seriously doubt Lifeway–can you see conservative SBC Lifeway carrying that shirt? I don’t have any tattoos either although I seriously considered getting a Celtic Cross somewhere at one time but I couldn’t figure out where to put it and just gave up. My husband has a homemade tattoo on the inside of his forearm that just says “M”. He did it in his younger, stupid days and isn’t very proud of it. Oh, well. It’s kinda funny.

My parents would croak if I wore jeans to church on Sun. mornings.. no idea why other than they are super traditional? I do however rebel and wear slacks. Go me. I wanted a tattoo during my college days. I tiny butterfly on the inside of my ankle but I chickened out as soon as we pulled into the parlors driveway. Needles! What was I thinking!..oh well its a cool idea and I find myself watching Miami Ink often. Mardel’s has some cool shirts.

Susan » Go slacks! Just out of curiosity . . . why did you want a butterfly?

I’m a girly girl and thought they were so pretty and dainty. My friend went thru with her tattoo and has a permanent Razorback right on her backside. *rolls my eyes*..it still disgust me. LOL.

Sorry to comment on a comment, but Susan, that is totally gross that your friend got a HOG on her rear-end. I love the Razorbacks and all, but a tattoo? You gotta be kidding me…
